In December of 2011, Red Light New Music will present a screening of Frtiz Lang’s Classic Science Fiction film Metropolis, performed with a new live score. The Red Light Chamber Orchestra will, for the 3rd consecutive year, perform a collectively-composed score to a classic film from the silent era. This blog will document the work of the eight composers who are collaborating on this score. The programmed composers who are embarking on this project feature some of the most exciting and engaging composers in New York City including Chris Cerrone, Adrian Knight, Nathan Koci, Kyle Hillbrand, Bob Pierzak, Vince Raikhel, Liam Robinson, and Scott Wollschleger.
The film explores the story of a massive, sprawling futuristic mega-city Metropolis, where society is divided into two classes: one of planners and management, who live high up in luxurious skyscrapers and one of workers, who live and toil underground. Though 84 years old, this German expressionist film has remained a mainstay of the classical film repertoire, a masterpiece of the 20th century.
